The UK and the EU: A New Way Forward?
EUGOV Study Visit to London, 20-21 February 2025

Our MAEIS Applied European Policy and Governance Studies (EUGOV) students travelled up from Canterbury to London for a study visit based around the theme “The UK and the EU: A New Way Forward?” on 20-21 February 2025.

The packed programme saw them first visit the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, the students were given an understanding of the dynamics of UK domestic politics and their impact on the relationship with the EU by Chris Bannister, Head of Europe Research Group.

In a briefing with Michael Martin Richter, UK Country Director, at the Hanns Seidel Foundation, the students learnt about the special nature and mission of a German political foundation and its activities in the UK since its creation in 2019 as a result of Brexit. They also received insights into recent societal and political changes in the UK, a country trying to make Brexit work.

Finally, at the European External Action Service (EEAS) Delegation in London, the students discussed questions such as European security, migration and the EU’s trade policy after interesting presentations by Felix Fabini and Elias Centellas about the EU’s external action and relationship with the UK post-Brexit.

And of course they spent some quality time discovering the British capital city, visiting the sights of the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben and Buckingham Palace!

We thank all contributing institutions and their representatives for their warm welcome and the time they dedicated to discussing with our students!
