Energy Field Trip to the Ruhr Region - 10-13 February 2025
Our Master in Global Energy Transition and Governance students took part in an exciting week of visits to Essen and the surrounding Ruhr region of Germany.
First up, they met up with CIFE Alumnus Lukas Bieber at e.on, who explained the energy network business and the complex regulations surrounding grid fees. As one of Europe’s largest energy companies, they consider themselves to be the “playmakers of the energy transition”!
At Innovation City Management, the students discovered how the former mining town of Bottrop has been transformed into a model for reduced CO2 thanks to the promotion of energy efficiency.
During a visit to Zeche Zollverein, the students learnt about the history of coal in the Ruhr region and were able to visit a well in order to better understand the different working conditions in this industrial complex, which is now preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Finally, they also attended the eWorld fair, where the students could meet professionals from the energy sector. With 10,000 visitors and 900 exhibitors from over 30 countries, it was certainly an exciting opportunity for our students to network and speak with potential future employers!
Thank you to all those involved for making this such a special week for our Energy students!
