Since Summer 2022, CIFE has been a contributing partner in the SEBR (Smart Energy Building Renovation) consortium within the Horizon2020 project ProcuRE. The consortium’s goal is to transform old buildings into energy-wise efficient buildings with state-of-the-art technology and to achieve 100% renewable energy supply (RES) in existing building stock. Whilst the consortium partners are currently deploying a technology package to develop green building, CIFE is in charge of educational activities to promote energy usages adapted to green buildings, thus contributing to a successful energy transition.
Two weeks ago, things got very concrete! CIFE offered its first workshop in a primary school in Nuremberg, Germany to inform a group of teachers about the many green changes for their school building, which was renovated and equipped with technologies to significantly reduce energy consumption and building emissions. And to equip them with pedagogical materials to design future activities with the pupils about climate and energy.
We’re excited to share one of the main products of CIFE’s pedagogical contribution: a children’s book with concise and engaging explanations of why our climate is changing and what we need to do to prevent further CO2 emissions and how to mitigate its effects. Beautifully illustrated by Chris Naylor-Ballesteros, with texts by Marianne Doubrère and laid out by Sigrid Hecker.
Pupils and teachers alike loved the booklet which has been produced in four languages, English, German, Portuguese and Spanish – with translations by Roya Meshki-Kataria (for the German edition), Ana Catarina Simões (for Portuguese) and Andrea Teufel (for Spanish).The next workshop will take place at the end of May in a Portuguese primary school in Vila Nova de Gaia.

Did you know? Buildings are responsible for 40% of the energy demand and 36% of CO2 emissions in Europe. It is expected that 90% of the currently existing building stock will still be in service in 2050, the year set for Europe to reach the energy reduction target of 80% compared to 2005. To achieve our climate goals, renovation in Europe must be accelerated, lifting many more existing buildings to an optimal efficiency level as well as maximising the deployment of self-consumed Renewable Energy Supply.
